CAMSHAFT GRINDING MACHINES

Before ordering a camshaft from a new supplier, you should ask the following questions! Do they GRIND the LOBES on their camshafts?  If the answer is NO..... DO NOT BUY THE CAMSHAFT! They purchase their camshafts from "THE LOW BIDDER!"

If they grind the lobes then ask the following questions:

What is the NAME of the CAMSHAFT GRINDING MACHINE that they use? If the answer is a STORM VULCAN..... DO NOT BUY THE CAMSHAFT! The STORM VULCAN was not a good machine when it was BRAND NEW! A used one is MUCH WORSE!

If the answer is a VAN NORMAN..... BE CAREFUL, and ask when the last time the machine had the ROCKER TABLE BEARINGS replaced ? The answer should be "WITHIN THE LAST 12 MONTHS". Ask when the last time the HEAD STOCK SPINDLE that holds the MASTER PLATE was sent to a PROFESSIONAL SPINDLE REBUILDER ? If the answer is "NEVER" do not buy the camshaft!

If the answer is a BERCO..... ask when the last time the machine had the ROCKER TABLE BEARINGS replaced ? The answer should be "WITHIN THE LAST 12 MONTHS". Ask when the last time the HEAD STOCK SPINDLE that holds the MASTER PLATE was sent to a PROFESSIONAL SPINDLE REBUILDER ? If the answer is "NOT WITHIN THE PAST 10 YEARS" do not buy the camshaft!

Then ask the MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION. When the camshaft is STRAIGNTENED, so that when it is held BETWEEN CENTERS, and the MAXIMUM JOURNAL RUNOUT is within .0005" TIR (total indicator runout), then ask is the MAXIMUM "BASECIRCLE RUNOUT" on ALL LOBES is GUARANTEED TO BE LESS THAN .0010" TIR. If the answer is .002" TIR... do not buy the camshaft!

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) camshaft lobe grinders.

There are MANY CNC camshaft grinders offered under various names in this automotive world! BE CAREFUL that the supplier uses only the VERY BEST ONE! In my opinion, there is only ONE GOOD NAME! That is LANDIS and it is ONLY MADE in the USA!

Landis is now owned by a French company and Landis is now named Cinetic Landis Grinding. Their web site is www.landis-us.com. There is another brand made in The United Kingdom (ENGLAND) and that brand is LUND. Landis now owns Lund BUT many Lund CNC camshaft grinders were made BEFORE Landis purchased the Lund company.

In my opinion some of these Lund machines are NOT AS GOOD as a new Landis 3L! Especially a "used" Landis/Lund or Lund.  All the "Original Equipment Manufacturers" (GM, Ford, ETC) use the Landis 3L CNC camshaft grinder! Only 3 (three) of the USA performance brand camshaft manufacturers own their own Landis 3L machines! I list them below for your information.

Of course there are several other USA camshaft manufacturers that own Landis 3L CNC camshaft grinders but, they supply only OEM and PRIVATE BRAND camshaft MARKETERS.
